First things first: “Caprica” is a prequel to Sci Fi Channel’s “Battlestar Galactica,” but it stands on its own. Like “Galactica,” “Caprica” is dark but not as claustrophobic or bleak. Beginning 58 years before the events seen in Battlestar Galactica, Caprica tells the story of how Colonial humanity first created the robotic Cylons, who would later plot to destroy human civilization in retaliation for their enslavement. Everything about Caprica was designed specifically to not repeat what we had done in Galactica. With these considerations and Caprica’s storyline already focused on events taking place before the two Cylon Wars, the series has a different identity, with its own tone, content and style.
It won’t premiere until January 22, but the buzz around Caprica is starting to grow. While many have chosen to watch Caprica when it premieres in the fall, some have already viewed the series premiere on DVD. “ With an unusually long gap between shooting the pilot and the beginning of series production, plus an extended production pause between the first 10 episodes and the second 10, there have been rumors that “Caprica” was taking its time to find its creative footing. “Battlestar Galactica” fans know how the story looks when it ends, but “Caprica” is about the very beginning of the end.
